Global search: find files across authorized sources

GJ soft editorial · Updated

Mac guide · GJ File Manager 2.98 · macOS 14+

The problem

When you remember a name but not its location, opening each workspace is slow. This is when a broader search becomes useful.

A practical answer

GJ File Manager's global search covers enabled, authorized sources. Its scope depends on indexing, permissions and source configuration.

Step by step

  1. Open Global Search from the Browse menu or your shortcut; the default is ⌥F.
  2. Enter a distinctive filename fragment and press Return, then inspect each result’s source and path.
  3. Check search settings and authorization when another source is needed.
  4. Preview or reveal the result and confirm the version.

Know the limits

Sources are not all enabled by default. Incomplete indexing, offline disks and expired permissions can leave results missing.

Common question

How does it differ from the top search field?

The toolbar and global shortcut use the same search capability. Actual coverage depends on enabled sources, authorization and indexing.
