A Mac folder will not open: check directory authorization

GJ soft editorial · Updated

Mac guide · GJ File Manager 2.98 · macOS 14+

The problem

A file can exist while an app is not allowed to access it. Missing authorization and a missing path are different problems.

A practical answer

Authorize the needed directory through GJ File Manager's folder picker and inspect remembered paths in Settings.

Step by step

  1. Choose Add in Workspaces and select the actual project folder.
  2. Confirm authorization in the system picker, then open the directory.
  3. If an old path no longer works, review authorization settings and select the folder again.
  4. Retry and distinguish access denial from an offline disk or nonexistent path.

Know the limits

Keep access specific. Solving one project problem does not require opening your whole home directory.

Common question

Does removing an authorization delete files?

No. Removing a remembered authorization is not deleting disk contents; access may need to be granted again.
