Inspect Archives Before Sharing a Mac Project Folder
Shared project folders often contain archives that hide old drafts or corrupted bundles. This workflow explains how to inspect every archive and folder with GJ File Manager before delivery, while keeping Finder as your standard navigation and your originals untouched.
Why archive inspection prevents delivery surprises
Similar archive names can conceal different delivery versions. A file named final.zip might not match the final folder you approved, and a corrupted or password-protected bundle could leave your recipient unable to open anything. Inspecting before extracting lets you check contents and output location first, keeping your working directory tidy and ensuring the recipient does not unwrap an unexpected or corrupted package.
Inspect a sample archive first
Using GJ File Manager, double-click a sample archive or choose Extract from its context menu. The archive workbench shows source information and a preview before extraction, along with the destination and any password requirement. Inspect that preview, then confirm and wait for completion. Afterward, inspect the resulting folder. A shortened preview does not mean partial extraction; the preview can be limited for responsiveness, but the actual task still performs complete checks. RAR is extraction-only, so do not bypass a safety rejection to force an untrusted archive through.
Separate working copies from the originals
Keep your originals safe by working only on copies or within a clearly named Delivery folder. In GJ File Manager, open that Delivery folder in its own tab and copy the required files from their sources. Inspect any name conflicts rather than replacing blindly. Check each item against your delivery list: name, content, version and whether it opens. A file group is not an automatically assembled delivery package, so copy the actual files into the delivery folder rather than sending a group as the attachment. If an archive is needed, compress this checked folder, inspect the package and retain a copy of the delivery.
Compare before you overwrite or synchronize
Names such as final and final-revised do not explain what changed, and overwriting first can lose newer work on the other side. Use GJ File Manager to compare files or folders so you can inspect missing and changed items before deciding whether to synchronize. Select two sample text files and use the configured Compare shortcut (default ⌥⌘D). Inspect missing, different and matching items, checking both paths. For supported text files, inspect the text differences. Equal file counts do not establish equal content, and a comparison cannot decide client requirements, confidentiality or final approval for you. If synchronization is needed, back up first and confirm its direction and mode, because mirroring can remove destination-only content.
Choose the right archive format and finish the check
When creating archives, choose ZIP, 7z or TAR.GZ according to the recipient's needs. Remember that RAR is extraction-only, so do not attempt to create one or force an untrusted archive through a safety rejection. After extraction, inspect the resulting folder to confirm that every expected item is present and opens correctly. Keep your originals untouched throughout; all checks and copies happen on the delivery side. Finder remains your standard file navigation tool, while GJ File Manager provides the archive workbench, comparison and delivery-folder workflow described here.
