GJ FILE MANAGER · FIELD NOTES

Recover the Right File, Not Just the Right Name

When several files share the same name, a path, a sort order, and a quick preview can help you recover the correct draft without opening the wrong one or endangering the original.

The problem: identical names in different folders

You have three files named 'proposal.docx' in different folders. One is the client-ready version; the others are earlier drafts or unrelated. The name alone does not tell you which is which. You need to know the file's location—its path—to identify the correct delivery file. On a Mac, you can check a file's full path using Get Info from its context menu. In GJ File Manager, you can click the current folder path to copy that directory path. This tells you exactly which folder you are in.

Step 1: Confirm the folder path before sorting

Open the folder that contains the candidate file. Read its displayed path. In GJ File Manager, click the current folder path to copy the directory location. Paste that path into your notes and verify the parent location. This is especially important when you have multiple folders with similar names, like 'Client A' and 'Client A - old'. Copying the path does not copy the file's contents; to deliver the file, you must copy the actual item or use an appropriate sharing method. Also note that a local absolute path usually will not work on a colleague's computer and does not grant access.

Step 2: Sort by modification date to find the latest draft

Finding yesterday's draft and finding a large file are different tasks. In GJ File Manager, open the sort menu and choose modification date. Look under today, yesterday, or a specific date section. Then preview the candidate. Remember that modification time is not creation time, so a file edited yesterday may have been created months ago. A recent timestamp only narrows your search: inspect the content before deciding which draft is current.

Step 3: Use hover preview to check content in place

Opening a separate application just to inspect one document interrupts your selection. Enable GJ File Manager's hover preview and pause the pointer over supported files. You can review per-type switches and size limits in preview settings. Adjust the delay if previews appear too often, or disable them for this browsing session. Preview support varies by format; large or protected files may be restricted. This is not the same as double-clicking: preview checks content in place, while double-clicking opens the file in its associated application. Use preview to confirm you have the right draft before opening or copying.

Step 4: Decide what to deliver and keep originals safe

Once you confirm the path, date, and preview, copy the actual file for delivery. Do not rely on the path alone as delivery—it only identifies location. If you plan to clean up, switch to size sorting in GJ File Manager to inspect larger items. Let background folder-size calculation finish before making a cleanup decision; an unavailable folder size does not mean zero bytes. Size only narrows the candidates. Decide using the contents, backup status, and whether the file is still needed. Always keep originals safe by making a copy rather than moving or deleting until you are certain.
