GJ FILE MANAGER · FIELD NOTES

Build a Reviewable Downloads Inbox with GJ File Manager

Treat your Mac Downloads folder as an inbox you review and copy from, not a pile you empty by date. This workflow uses modification-date sorting, previews, a second tab, and file groups to file material first and clear later, keeping originals safe.

Why a date-range cleanup can go wrong

Downloads often mixes disposable installers with the only saved copy of something important. A folder might hold a stale installer next to Contract_v3_signed.pdf or a scan named IMG_2043.pdf whose purpose is unclear from the name. Clearing a date range without inspection can remove a file that was never filed anywhere else. Modification time is not necessarily download time, so size, extension, or a similar name alone is not a safe basis for permanent removal. The safe order is file first, clear later.

Review by date before touching anything

Open Downloads and start with a recent date section rather than the whole folder. Sort by modification date and look under today, yesterday, or a specific date. Preview documents and images whose purpose is unclear from the name, such as a PDF called scan_2043.pdf or an image called IMG_2043. This step is review only; nothing leaves the folder yet.

Copy into the project destination in a second tab

Open the project destination in another tab in GJ File Manager. Copy what you need from Downloads into that destination, then verify the copies actually arrived before doing anything else. Finder remains available alongside GJ File Manager. Folders and groups are separate ideas, and copying creates a separate copy in the chosen destination.

Use a group for scattered material

When related documents and images already live in different folders, making extra copies just for convenience creates version confusion. Create a clearly named file group such as Project review and add relevant items from other locations. A group is an access aid around a task, not an independent backup, and it does not turn files into cloud copies. If you need a delivery copy, copy it separately and verify it.

Clear only after filing, and keep uncertain items

Once copies are verified and other important items have been filed, deal separately with items you are certain you no longer need. Keep uncertain items for review instead of deleting them. One copied file does not validate the whole folder, so verify the destination and check that other important items were also filed. Use size sorting only to narrow candidates; background folder-size calculation must finish first, and an unavailable folder size does not mean zero bytes.
